Hanover Square is the city’s first commercial district and oldest neighborhood. The European-style neighborhood is peppered with a variety of salons, retail stores, restaurants and nightlife options. Residents enjoy the luxury of walking out their doors to enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. The neighborhood’s retail and commercial history can be traced back to 1880, due to its proximity to the Erie Canal. Hanover Square is listed on The National Register of Historic Places, and features a diversity of 19th century architecture. In 2001, a number of the upper floors of these historic buildings were converted into loft-style apartments.
